Wanted: Justice for the victims of the Holocausts in Korea

Lee Wha Rang, April 15, 1998

The US Military Government in Korea (USMGIK - 1945-1948), directly and indirectly, killed some 500,000 Koreans (NB: there is no generally accepted figure: estimates range from 100,000 to 800,000) in the name of anti-Communism during 1945 - 1948.

The US military recruited the worst elements of Korea - those Koreans who had no sense of patriotism and who had worked for the Japanese colonizers as police and military - to do their dirty work. Many of them were expelled from North Korea - for example, Jung Il Kwon, Paik Sun Yup, Kim Chul Yul and Song Ho Chang were from North Korea and played key roles in the Cheju Massacre.

It is true that only a handful of the American military in Korea were involved in the Holocausts in Korea, but the fact remains that numerous crimes were committed by people controlled by the US military. The Korean participants claim that they were made to do what they did by their "mi-gook-nom" (Yankee devils) supervisors and advisors, while the American participants (e.g., Gen. Hodge, Gen. Dean, Capt. Hausman, Capt. Brown and Maj. Nichols) talked about "blood-thirsty gooks".

Why did the Amercians hire these "blood-thirsty gooks" as police chiefs, CIC and military leaders? Did they expect these criminals to become democratic peace-loving Koreans (as claimed in American and South Korean text books)? The tragedy for Korea is that these criminals destroyed the democratic peace-loving Koreans (labelled as "Communists").

Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, US military archives on the massacres are open to the public and the ugly truth is being exposed by American and Korean historians. Eyewitnesses to the massacres and the victims' families have begun to step forward and demand justice.

The USMGIK and their Korean butchers killed innocent civilians - even infants being born. Under the USMGIK, victims' land, houses, bank accounts and other properties were given to their accusers and the police. All a butcher-thief had to do was to produce "evidence" or an "witness" and he would have his victim (and his kin) arrested, tortured until "confessed" and rubbed off. The arresting policemen normally received a piece of the "action". In addition, the murderers received brownie points from their proud American masters.

The Cheju April 3rd "Incident" is only one of the massacres in Korea. 'Anti-Communist' gangsters ('Northwest Youth' Corps - Suh-book-chung-yun-dang) from Seoul descended upon the island and systematically killed off a third of the Cheju inhabitants. The terrorists (mostly homeless refugees from North Korea) took over the farms, fisheries, shops and factories of their victims and settled down - unholy blooded gifts from Uncle Sam.

Today, Cheju Island is a popular tourist spot for Japanese and Koreans. One wonders how many of the business owners have bloodstains on their hands? How many innocent victims lie buried beneath the golf courses, tennis courts, hotels and mansions?

The judgement day is coming for the butcher-thieves. All the people of the world with conscience will soon learn of the crimes against humanity and they will surely demand that the governments of South Korea and of the United States and the Hague War Crimes Tribunal:
