Bongsung-wha ("봉성화"/"봉성아")

Music: Hong Nam-pa (홍난파).   Lyric: Kim Hyun-jun (김형준).

This song was composed in 1920 right after the March First Independence Movement (March 1, 1919) was savagely put down by the Japanese police and military. The song laments the tragedy of the Korean people and yearns for the spring of freedom.

The bong-sung flower by the fence, you look forlorn.  It was only yesterday, in the long summer days, when beautiful damsels played enchanted by your beauty.
Soon the summer days have gone away and the cool winds of Autumn began to blow away your shining pedals. You have lost your youthful beauty and grandeur.
Freezing winds from north and icy snows may destroy and bury your body, but your dream for resurrection is alive and it will be realized soon.
