05/28 kww: Ernst Oppert's Kingdom of Corea: Grave-Robbing in the Name of God -- Lee Wha Rang, May 27, 2000. In June 1867, Earnest Oppert (a German), Feron (a French Catholic priest) and Jenkins (an American) mounted an expedition to rob the grave of a Korean king. The grave-robbers charted the armed steamer China and some 100 Chinese and Malay pirates, formerly with the Ever Victorious Army of the Taiping War. They succeeded in partially desecrating the royal tomb but the Korean defenders forced them to retreat.
05/28 kww: You'll Never Guess What South Korea Frowns Upon (WP) - Although I generally consider myself to be a law-abiding citizen, I don't mind admitting that I engaged in illegal work in South Korea for the better part of six years. My clients were more than willing to pay under the table for the illicit services I provided. And, for the right price, I was more than happy to render that service: teaching their children English.
05/26 kww: THE LAST MONTHS OF THE TAIPING WAR -- What does the Taiping have to do with Korea? 05/23 kww: Seoul’s Quandary (Stratfor - 23 May 2000 : After years of outperforming other Asian economies, South Korea’s economy is showing signs of weakness. The timing is sensitive, as Seoul prepares for a summit with North Korea and plans massive economic assistance, development and investment in the north. All would tax South Korea’s economy. But by downplaying the potential costs and the current warning signs, officials in Seoul risk undermining their own economic stability.

05/22 kww:A Press Divided: Disputed Accounts of a Korean War Massacre -- By FELICITY BARRINGER
05/22 kww:Nogun-ri Massacre Investigation (US News) - KWW Editor's note: Fact-finding or white-washing? A 1973 fire destroyed the service records of many Korean War veterans and Pentagon has to rely on witness accounts and other indirect evidenced. It is likely that there are more vets toting the official line - "we were there to help our ally in need" than those who dare to say "we were sent into that hell-hole to kill filthy gooks." This process of "investigation" is akin to investigating the Holocaust by interviewing German Abwehr vets. The overwhelming majority would claim no knowledge of the Holocaust and so one could conclude that it never happened and that those who say it did must be lying.

05/21 kww: War and Remembrance - By Michael Dobbs -- There is nothing so humbling for a reporter as suddenly finding himself the subject of another reporter's story--and being asked searching questions about the credibility of his sources and the accuracy of his reporting. I found myself in exactly this situation last week, when U.S. News & World Report questioned the credibility of a U.S. Army veteran I had used as a central character in a detailed reconstruction of an alleged massacre of Korean refugees by U.S. Army troops in the early stages of the Korean War.

The committee said that it would collect further evidence to counter the report and called on the U.S. government to speed up the release of results of its investigation. Chung Eun-yong, head of NMIC said that the original Associate Press (AP) report quoting Edward Daily and Delos Flint was truthful and the government should not cover this up. He added that Washington was deliberately delaying issuing the results as a means to absolve itself of any blame.
