08/24 National Human Rights Commission of Korea Urges Abolition of National Security Law (Donga) -- The National Human Rights Commission of Korea urged the chairman of the National Assembly and the Minister of Justice to completely abolish the National Security Law after its all-member committee discussion on August 24. It is the first time that a national institution has suggested abolishing the law.

08/24 North Korea, Eyeing Election, Issues Stream of Insults at Bush (NYT) -- North Korea called President Bush an "imbecile" and "a tyrant that puts Hitler into the shade" on Monday, unleashing a stream of insults that seemed to rule out any serious progress on nuclear disarmament talks before the American election this fall.

08/22 S Korea loses gold in men's gymnastics due to judge's error (Korea Herald) -- Officials from the International Gymnastics Federation said on Saturday (August 21) that a mistake was made with the scoring of the men's gymnastics all-around event, which cost South Korean gymnast, Yang Tae Young, a gold medal having to settle with silver, however competitor Paul Hamm from the United States gained a gold.

08/22 SK Lawmakers Caution U.S. Senators inDeclaration Against NK Human Rights Act (OhmyNews) -- South Korean politicians from the ruling Uri Party issued a statement last week stressing that a piece of legislation called the North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004, which was passed unanimously in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 21, may have dire consequences for peace on the Korean peninsula. 

08/22 NK Strongly Criticizes Vietnam Over Defectors (Korea Times) -- North Korea has strongly criticized Vietnam for letting hundreds of its citizens go to South Korea last month, according to lawmakers who recently visited the Southeast Asian nation.  Pyongyang was disturbed when South Korea airlifted 468 North Korean escapees from Vietnam by chartered flights in late July. It accused Seoul of kidnapping them and threatened to take unspecified retaliatory actions against South Korea and Vietnam.

08/18 [EDITORIAL]Family liability (Korea Herald) -- Like father, like son?  In a modern democratic society, family liability is prohibited in criminal justice. A person cannot be discriminated against just because another family member has committed a criminal or other ignominious act. Such discrimination is little different from calling for the admission of guilt by association.

08/17 Last American defector in North Korea agrees to tell story (yahoo) -- The last surviving American defector to communist North Korea wants to tell his story to put a human face on the Stalinist state which he believes is unfairly vilified abroad, British film-makers said. "The US military teaches you they are evil Communists, they have horns, they have fangs, they have red faces. I never believed such bullshit. Of course, there is an ideological difference, but that is the only difference."

08/16 [NEWS ANALYSIS]Chung expected to boost inter-Korean ties (Korea Herald) -- With Unification Minister Chung Dong-young now captain of the diplomatic and security team, experts expect more government action to advance inter-Korean ties that have made little progress amid tension over the North's nuclear weapons program. Some political analysts said the National Security Council would have less power as its role of coordinating the Unification, Foreign and Defense Ministries has now been delegated to the heavyweight politician.

08/12 Australian Foreign Minister Vindicates Kim Myong Chol Threat to Strike Australia with Missiles (cfkap) -- Speaking in the Australian capital of Caberra, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer vindicated the year-earlier threat made by Dr. Kim Myong Chol  last year that the DPRK would readily retaliate against Australia with long-range missiles tipped with nuclear warheads if Canberra should be part of the American military operations to intercept North Korean cargo ships. 
Responding to the KMC threat, Downer dismissed it as groundless (Australian Foreign Ministry, July 15, 2003) (the Age, July 15, 2003) and (ABC, July 15, 2003). He referred to the Kim statement by name.  One year later, Downer had to retract his denial of the Kim statement admitting that North Korea is capable of targeting Australia with a long-range missile

08/12 Japanese Prosecution Records on Korean Independence Worriers Unearthed (Donga) -- Japan’s prosecution records on Korea’s independence groups and activists during the colonial period of 1935-36 have been unearthed.  On August 13, Shin Guk-ju, the former president of Seoul’s Dongguk University, disclosed Volume 25 of the “Ideology Research Material,” which was published by the crime division of the Japanese prosecution in 1936. The cover of the booklet that Professor Shin owned was marked with a warning of “Top Secret” and “Security Clearance” and a serial number of 409.

China's Sui and Tang dynasties made several invasions on Goguryeo in ancient times but failed to conquer it, gaining the small Korean kingdom recognition as the most powerful in Northeast Asia

08/08 The Forgotten Glory of Koguryo (KWW) -- Koguryo (高句麗), one of Korea's ancient three kingdoms, existed for 700 years ruled by 26 wise kings. All kings strove to better people's welfare and strengthen the military. Koguryo had to fight invaders from north and its citizens were well organized and train ed in the art of warfare. It developed unique culture and remarkably advanced educational, socio-political and military systems.

08/04 WAR.WIRE North Korea could soon be able to target US with missiles- study (SpaceWar) -- North Korea is developing a pair of new ballistic missile systems, including a sea-launched model, which could soon enable the Stalinist state to target the United States, a leading military publication said Tuesday.
